THE ART/CRAFT GROUP
Jewish Community Services’ Art/Craft group was established in March 2010 when the vision of a space for the creative outlet for the clients of JCS was realized. Clients, guests and volunteers gather together in a hub of activity once a week to engage in various arts and crafts which include jewellery making, drawing, painting, mosaic, adult colouring in and fabric painting. Here they enter into a world where through the engagement with the creative process participants can experience a wide range of benefits where the project marries a bundle of needs including meaningful occupation, recreation, creative expression, a sense of belonging, camaraderie, social interaction, friendship and mutual support. Further participants gain a sense of accomplishment through mastery of a skill which in turn nudges the development of self-confidence and bolsters self-esteem. The creative way of thinking assists clients to develop coping skills and search for solutions to problems which can contribute to a more meaningful life. If not drawn to arts and crafts members may enjoy refreshments, socialize, and lend books from the library corner. The launch of a computer/internet station adds to the repertoire of resources with multiple benefits.
